Smartphones can be used to detect skin cancer where high-powered microscopes are unavailable.  Dermatologists tested specimens with a smartphone microscope make with a $14 lens, a small piece of plastic, and tape.  Using this device, samples could be photographed and sent to an expert for interpretation.  Ninety percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 60% of melanomas were detected, according to to findings in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
