“What do you mean you REFUSE to ride a scooter? You ride a lawn mower all the time! How is this different?”
This is my friend, Denise, telling me about a conversation with her husband, Joe. Some health issues have limited Joe’s mobility, but by riding a motorized scooter, he could return to doing many of the things he used to do. But refusing to use the scooter leaves Joe trapped at home.
Denise is frustrated and saddened by Joe’s refusal to even consider using the scooter. Denise is an active and energetic 66-year-old, and she misses the time they spent together doing fun activities.
She also doesn’t understand why Joe won’t use the scooter, when doing so would “let them get back to living.”
What is going on here?
